Week 11

Carly Goeller

In the Media, there are six corporations that are media conglomerates and control most of what we see and hear. These corporations include General Electric, Walt Disney, News Corp, Time Warner, Viacom, CBS. These monopolies own many different television stations, internet sites, and radio waves. However, there are many different smaller and local corporations that are capable of delivering quality information. I found 3 sources that I myself readily use when acquiring information.

I found out about the British Broadcasting Corporation through numerous school related experiences. The BBC is the principal broadcaster in the UK, and it happens to be the largest broadcaster in the world, with about 23,000 staff. Outside the UK, the BBC has provided services by direct broadcasting and re-transmission contracts by sound radio and internet services. These are the services I found most useful from the BBC, when using school related research or news I always check the BBC first. They offer comprehensive videos on science and all other related fields that I often find on YouTube. Also, there services are found all over the web. Because the BBC is such a large company, with so many employees, they are able to cover a wide spectrum of areas. I readily use the BBC because they provide the information from a UK point of view somewhat free from the American conservative/ liberal biases found in almost every news corporation.

Another source of information I found credible was this very states own newspaper, The Connecticut Post. The post is a daily newspaper located in Bridgeport, Connecticut. It serves the greater Bridgeport area, Fairfield County, and the Lower Naugatuck Valley. To me, I prefer the Connecticut post. It offers the same weather, sports and overall news coverage as the big newspapers such as the NY. Times and everything else. Also, the CT post offers filtered and pertinent information that is specific to our state, not offered by big newspapers such as the NY times. The credibility of the CT post is good also, because it is a state newspaper the information is most likely true. The CT post is a very cheap and dependable newspaper that is delivered daily. And is another example of a news corps outside of the big six that offer credible information.

Another independent news source I found is another local and preferred news station of mine .WICC (AM 600) is a news and information radio station in Bridgeport Connecticut, and is owned by Cumulus media. WICC is Bridgeport Connecticut's first radio station, pretty reputable considering Bridgeport used to be one of the most productive cities in American. WICC was also the first radio in the state, starting on the air on November 8, 1926. “ W-I-C-C “ stands for "Industrial Capital of Connecticut", which well described Bridgeport at the time. I like WICC because they have show’s like the Clark Howard show, Clark Howard is a self made millionaire who provides you with many secrets for economic success. I happen to certainly enjoy his show, however WICC is filled with many knowledgeable anchors, personalities, and meteorologists.

Besides the big six which are General Electric, Walt Disney, News Corp, Time Warner, Viacom, CBS corporations there happen to many different forms of reputable news sources. The British Broadcasting Company, the CT Post and WICC are all forms of independent news sources which offer credible news.
